Georgia is a part of the Caucasus region. It is situated between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by Russia in the north and northeast, Turkey and Armenia in the south, and by Azerbaijan in the southeast. Georgia forms part of Europe’s easternmost flank, straddling the continent’s border with Asia. Set on the shores of the Black Sea, Georgia’s coastline faces the Balkans.
Georgia presents a remarkable mix of landscapes and 12 different climate zones, ranging from subtropical to alpine to semi-desert, and the Black Sea with its beaches. The amazing nature and diversity of this country were the source of inspiration for many writers and poets. Georgia was the site of the famous Greek Mythology, the Golden Fleece, sought by Jason and the Argonauts.
Georgia has a distinctive culture and a rich history that can be traced to classical antiquity and beyond. The tales of Georgia’s ancient history are not without foundation. Two of the oldest European skeleton remains to date back 1.8 million years are found in Dmanisi an archaeological site in southern Georgia. The earliest evidence of wine production is dated 6,000 years BC and was found in the country. Georgia is believed to be the oldest winemaking country in the world.
The history of Georgia in the history of struggling for freedom against the world’s biggest empires (Roman, Mongol, Byzantine, Persian, Ottoman, and Russian). And during the Soviet era, Georgia suffered terrible repressions at the hands of Joseph Stalin, a native of Georgia, who had tens of thousands purged and executed. Russia turned Georgia into one of the more prosperous Soviet republics renowned for its spas resorts, cuisine, and wine. Upon the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia reclaimed its independence but at a heavy price.
As people of distinct cultures, Georgians are not related to the Russians, Turks, or Greeks, nor do they have any ethnic or linguistic ties to other nations that surround them. Some theories link Georgians to Basque and Corsican people in Southwestern Europe, but there is no evidence of this.
Georgian cuisine and drinks are rightfully famous. Popular national dishes include khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread and khinkali, minced, spiced meat in a dumpling, and ghvezeli, a pastry stuffed with meat, potatoes, cheese, or other ingredients, usually sold in markets or on the streets. The drink Chacha is clear fruit homebrew, which is analogous to Italian grappa. And Georgia has some of the best wines and high-quality beer in the world.
